Students follow a 5 year course leading to GCSE Design & Technology.

In Years 7 and 8 students study:
Constructional Materials, including timber, metal and plastic
Textiles
Graphics, including orthographic, isometric and free-hand drawing

In Years 9 and 10 students study:
Resistant Materials
Electronics
Textiles
Food

In year 11 students design and make their own project, in either Resistant Materials, Electronics, Textiles or Food. They select a real need, investigate it in detail, design a solution, plan and make their solution and evaluate it. This project constitutes up to 60% of the final GCSE grade.

In the final two terms of Year 11, students study for examinations in resistant materials, electronics, textiles or food. The examinations provide the final 40% of the GCSE grade.

Throughout the five years students’ work is marked against the National Curriculum criteria of ability to design and make. These marks are used to produce reports, measure students’ progress, determine sets and finally generate the course work element of the GCSE grade.

Design and Technology enjoys a reputation for being interesting, diverse, demanding and achieving very high results.
