English in Years 7-9 offers a lively range of activities which place equal emphasis on Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing. Students are encouraged to use a variety of forms and styles in their written work and to revise work to improve content, accuracy and presentation. The team is committed to combining creativity with technical and grammatical skills. Each student has a folder of work which is used to monitor progress.

In Years 10 and 11 most students follow an integrated course of study leading to GCSE examinations in English and English Literature. The following major areas are covered:

Reading a range of texts (including Pre-1914 prose, plays and poetry, plays by Shakespeare, and poems from different cultures).
Creative writing
Media Studies
Post 1914 drama
Speaking assessed as individual, groups and whole class work and listening

By studying a range of literary, non fiction and media texts students learn to understand choices which writers, including themselves, make in language, structure and form to achieve the effects desired.

The English Team run an English support club on Friday lunchtimes.

A small group of students studying Work – Related Learning courses in year 10 study English Language GCSE only.
