Essential features of social education are the
promotion of quality of life and the physical, social and mental
well-being of the students. It is a responsibility which the College
shares with parents, governors and members of the community so that what
is learned at college can be supported by appropriate experiences at home.
The components are: family life, safety, psychological
aspects, sex and relationships education, personal hygiene, substance use
and misuse, citizenship and careers education.
Sex and
Relationships Education
Appropriate and responsible sex and relationships education is an element
in the work of the College in preparing students for adult life. It is in
line with the Department for Education and Skills circular that parents
can see any teaching materials before they are introduced into the
classroom and have the right to withdraw their son/daughter from any
lesson that goes beyond the science curriculum in this aspect.
Our aim is to ensure that students understand the range of attitudes
and behaviour in present day society and to consider their own position
and make informed, researched and responsible decisions about the
attitudes and behaviour they adopt. Students will be helped to appreciate
the benefits of a stable family and the responsibilities of parenthood.
